STTARS is looking for a Practice Facilitator to join its Clinical Services and Leadership Teams. The Practice Facilitator will provide support and guidance to practitioners across the organisation alongside the Clinical Services Manager and Team Leaders and is responsible for building a service delivery culture that meets best practice and integrates findings from international research and clinical practice. The Practice Facilitator will also design and deliver high quality practice development and professional learning programs within STTARS and externally to build the skills and capacity of internal staff and staff at mainstream services to appropriately respond to and care for refugee clients and survivors of torture and trauma.

Position Description - Practice Facilitator
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Providing individual and group reflective practice supervision to practitioners using a reflective and evidence informed approach, that ensures the work with clients is in line with best practice and STTARS model.
- Providing advice, consultation and support to practitioners working with high risk, complex and/or sensitive cases.
- Identifying practice quality issues for development and training opportunities.
- Contributing to the development and delivery of professional development to practitioners based on STTARS model and emerging from international best practice.
- Providing training on behalf of STTARS to external organisations to build capacity of people in the sector to respond to the needs of survivors of torture and trauma.
QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:
The successful candidate must have relevant tertiary qualifications in social work, psychology or a related discipline and hold registration with appropriate professional body. Ideally, they will also be an accredited supervisor (Psychology Board Approved Supervisor, Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia or Australian Association of Social Work) and hold a Certificate IV in training and assessment.
Essential skills and experience include:
- Extensive experience in the application of evidence-based practice in trauma recovery work.
- Experience providing specialised case consultation and advice on complex cases.
- Experience facilitating practice-based training for practitioners who work with survivors of trauma.
- Experience working with refugees and/or clients of a culturally and linguistically diverse background and/or with clients who experience systemic disadvantage.
- Ability to implement systems and processes that support accurate record keeping and preparation of reports.
- Knowledge of reflective clinical supervision theory and approaches.
- Knowledge of and commitments to the principles of social justice and human rights.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

- A valid and current Working with Children Check (WWCC)
- A valid and current National Criminal History Check (Police Clearance)

STTARS is looking for multiple Community Connector/Bi-Cultural Group Facilitators to join the Communities, Allied Health and Therapeutic Groups (CAT) team, to enhance access to specialist trauma services, early intervention and build capacity within specific community populations.
This role will assist with supporting individuals, families and communities from refugee backgrounds to promote wellbeing and recovery from trauma. The successful candidates will particularly focus on improving understanding and linkage between STTARS and the specified communities as well as developing safe, positive relationships in group settings and activities to foster a sense of belonging and support healing and thriving.
Applications are encouraged from professionals with strong community connections, in particular the Congolese, Palestinian and Chin communities.
PD - Community Connector and Bi Cultural Facilitator
KEY RESPONSIBLITIES INCLUDE:
- Using demonstrated skills, experience and cultural knowledge to increase STTARS’ understanding of community needs.
- Helping STTARS remove barriers to accessing its services to people in the community.
- Building meaningful and lasting relationships between STTARS and the specified community.
- Participating in active community outreach to promote STTARS services and identity and engage with potential clients.
- Working closely with the CAT Team Leader to develop and lead community-based responses to improve wellbeing and promote trauma recovery.
- Working in close collaboration with the CAT Team to co-facilitate groups.
QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:
The successful candidate will ideally possess and/or demonstrate:
- Lived experience – personal or familial understanding and lived experience relating to the refugee journey
- Community engagement – active engagement with individuals, families and communities demonstrating meaningful connection and support.
- Previous experience working within multicultural environments.
- Communication skills – proficiency in spoken and written English, as well as relevant community languages to ensure ability to effectively support groups in a language other than English.
- Engagement and compassion – assist with approaching newly settled individuals and families with empathy and understanding.
- Workshop facilitation skills – capable to co-facilitate and deliver workshops that empower families and communities.
- Cultural respect – collaborate with our staff and clients who come from a wide range of cultural and religious backgrounds.
- Commitments to human rights – advocate for and uphold human rights and social justice principles, respecting diversity in all forms.

STTARS is looking for more than one Counsellor Advocate to join its Service Delivery teams on 12 month fixed term contracts. These positions have flexibility to be offered in part-time or fill time capacities and will be negotiated with successful candidates.
These positions will deliver specialised torture and trauma counselling and advocacy that is human rights based, trauma-informed, strengths based and recovery oriented. The role may be required to work across the STTARS client base with individual adults, children and young people as well as groups, families and communities who are in the process of transitioning from war, conflict and violence into settlement and safety.
Applications are encouraged from professionals who can demonstrate genuine commitment to ensuring the individual needs of the clients are met, while providing counselling and advocacy services through a trauma-informed approach in accordance with the STTARS Clinical Practice Framework.
KEY RESPONSIBLITIES INCLUDE:
- Conducting specialised assessments to develop counselling plans which identify the most appropriate strategies for meeting the needs of the clients, ensuing the clients are actively involved in assessment, goal setting, service provision and evaluation.
- Within a therapeutic case management framework, advocating for individuals and their families for the purpose of establishing sound connections and appropriate services.
- Identifying services that will assist in meeting client’s current and longer term transitional needs.
- Preparing and maintaining client note and files, ensuring all information is accurate and recorded to required standards.
- Working at and maintaining a high standard of professional and ethical practice.
- Building effective relationships with local service providers and other relevant agencies, in order to maximise client access to services.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:
The successful candidate must have relevant tertiary qualifications in social work, psychology, counselling or a related discipline.
Essential skills and experience include:
- Proven experience in undertaking comprehensive psycho-social assessments to establish appropriate therapeutic goals with clients.
- Demonstrated experience in the counselling of adults, children and young people, including recognising and responding to the effects of trauma and the specific impact on family relationships.
- Knowledge of counselling models that are trauma informed, strength based and recovery oriented.
- Experience in understanding and adapting counselling practices to cultural sensitivities.
- Knowledge of significant psychological, social and cultural issues confronting asylum seekers and refugees and the impact of such factors on the function of individuals, families and communities.
THE SUCCESSUL CANDIDATE WILL ALSO IDEALLY HAVE:
- Experience working within a culturally diverse setting.
- Experience in working within a small, collaborative team environment.
- Knowledge of the refugee/human rights sector or other community service areas and/or experience in a not for profit environment.
